About This Work
Veerpoort, Schoonhoven: this gate, when closed, protects Schoonhoven, a small Dutch town, against floods from the river Lek, an offshoot of the Rhine river. It is therefore a metaphor for protection, safety and stability in an ever changing, turbulent world; as such, the symbol makes resonant the essentially transitional quality.
