About This Work

The quiet of a small Dutch town, far from the nearest highway, could represent all continuation we so often seek in life. And yet, there is a multi-level reality behind the image. The tower is the town hall in front of which, in 1591, the last witch was burned in the Netherlands. Pragmatic as always, the Dutch strangled Marigje Arriens as a merciful act before burning her. There are thus hidden depths in the seeming calm of the quiet canal and sleepy town: metaphors for humanity abound in this image.
