About This Work
Autumn leaves as a metaphor for the passing of all things is not a new concept. But here, Willems cleverly combines juxtaposition and similarity at the same time: man versus nature, and yet the similarity of decay of the leaves with decay of the road marking. The shared yellow only serves to emphasize the connection that we, humans, have with the inevitability of decay in all things universal, and this proclaims a strong message.
