About This Work

Willems's work here takes an unusual view: instead of the view of or in the Chelsea hotel, as in work by Mapplethorpe, Warhol and others, here we look at the view from the hotel, across the street. The archetypal New York brownstone with its fire escape is further enhanced with the Stars and Stripes in the key position. Willems captured an essence of New York and the USA in this unusual image.
